To be or not to be
So, lets just be real for a sec, okay?! So, it is very normal to be afraid to see someone for therapy or counseling. The title someone has and what they actually do can be a bit much. And couching is a whole thing that I’m not going to get into, just know that coaching is forward looking at current problems and solutions, not looking back to heal and process the past. So, getting back on topic, ultimately you want some kind of licensed counselor or licensed social worker to do counseling or therapy with. The coursework and focus for counselors and social workers do differ some, but both have rigorous amounts of coursework, unpaid experience (internship), supervised work experience, and challenging exams to get licensed in a particular state. I feel like most people say therapy, so that’s what I usually say. (Soon we will hopefully have regional or national licenses to cut some of the red tape and allow greater access to therapy, this is currently in process—so stay tuned, progress is really slow.)
All that to say, yeah, it’s confusing. But, here’s the thing…the thing that really matters is the connection you feel with your person, your therapist. That is the single most important factor. I block at least 30 minutes for a free consultation to meet via Zoom with potential clients looking for a therapist (Zoom for business, which is secure and private). If we don’t click, I want you to keep searching until you find the person that is meant for you. That is a personal thing, and has to be experienced to know. There is no formula for choosing the perfect therapist. I like people to meet me, then sleep on it. Then I follow up by the end of the week and ask if they want to schedule. Some people are ready to schedule that first session ASAP at the end of the consultation, other people have some other therapists to meet and interview. I used to be really hurt if people didn’t want to work with me, but I have since learned that it’s best for both of us. If I’m not their cup of tea, okay cool. It still hurts some, but I know it’s for the best. The people that are meant for me, are very clear that what I have to say speaks to them in a very real way. It just is or isn’t. So, if your on the fence, please reach out and schedule a consultation, no cost, no pressure. I know it’s a really big deal, but if you’ve been thinking about doing this for awhile..let’s make today the day you take the first step. -Tina
